The Power of Discipline
In my years of teaching, I’ve seen big successes. In fact, I don’t remember ever seeing my approach not working – in my own life or others. However that doesn’t mean it always works for everyone all the time, and there’s a reason for this: It’s all about whether we put it into practice or not. The gym always works, it’s just whether we go or not.
What makes things more difficult is we have this lower-self mind sometimes called the ego, which is that mind chatter part of ourselves that always tends to the negative and the material. And one thing this lower-self mind is very good at is talking us out of doing the practices we know are good for us.
But some people see the value of this work and do apply it conistently. Sometimes, it’s desperation that forces the disciplined practice. A memorable example was where a woman attending my groups in London completely transformed her appearance using my Confidence Evoke practice. She was depressed about so much in her life, listened to what I said and decided to give it a go because she felt she had no other options. After learning about the practice, something resonated with her and she committed to doing it until it worked for her.
People in the group at the time were amazed by her transformation when she returned to the group after several months and yet puzzled why the same practice wasn’t working for them. But it was clear to me – they might have known about the practice but they weren’t working it. This woman on the other hand had discipline, she did the Confidence Evoke several times a day – and they didn’t. She used the practice to shift her beliefs and stayed in this new perspective more often than not. For these other members of the group they’d be wowed by the success stories they heard at the group on Monday evenings and then very quickly get taken over by their ego’s mind chatter, and forget about it all until the next week. This is equivalent of being wowed by a gym trainer’s gains, doing one push up a week and then wondering why it isn’t working for you.
Are You Evoking Confidence or Fear?
The Confidence Evoke is where you evoke feelings which match what you want. It takes practice because the mind is used to doing the opposite all the time, evoking fear or doubt or worry or all kinds of negativity instead, so you’ve really got to push it with your new practice to keep it going. Discipline as a word sounds off-putting and hard work, but it’s harder work not to do these practices. We are using the mind all the time anyway, and so this is about refining what you are already doing and shifting what you do to something beneficial. Like many of my practices and anything worth doing, the Confidence Evoke is more difficult at the beginning but once you get going with it it gets easier.
Getting a Coach
The reason people winning in their field have coaches is primairily for this reason – to foster discipline through having someone holding them to account. Yes, there’s many other advantages but it’s a fact that if you’re paying someone to coach you, there’s way more chance you’ll follow through. If you yourself have been studying personal development principles or manifesting theory for years and not seen results this could be a message for you (you can find details of my coaching on my website).
The Key to Freedom
That said, don’t be disappointed if you haven’t got 100% discipline. The word discipline comes from disciple. Even the disciples of Jesus lost their focus (falling asleep when Jesus instructed them to stay alert, not following his teachings to the letter etc) – and there are many other examples of disciplined people who still have gone in and out with their practice before they found their flow. So we want to stop reaching for perfection, which can make us give up on the practices entirely. We want to remind ourselves how well we are doing at the practices – and then get on with doing the practices. Discipline sounds like it’s restrictive but it really is the key to freedom as it frees you from the control of your overthinking mind, and gives you the success you are looking for.
